Lost access versus stolen funds: an important distinction
These are two very different problems with very different solutions.
- Lost access means the crypto is still sitting at your address on the blockchain, but you cannot open the door: a forgotten password, a damaged device, an incomplete seed phrase. Recovery here is technical, and the odds depend on what information survives.

Forgotten wallet passwords
If you set a password years ago and can no longer remember it, all may not be lost. Where you can recall fragments, patterns, or the sort of passwords you used at the time, targeted technical approaches can sometimes succeed where blind guessing never would. The more you can remember, the better the prospects.
Old Bitcoin Core wallets and wallet.dat files
Many early adopters mined or bought Bitcoin and left it in a Bitcoin Core wallet, stored in a file called wallet.dat. If you still have that file, or a backup of the machine it lived on, it may be possible to restore access, subject to any encryption password. Even old, half-forgotten backups are worth examining before you assume the worst.
Partial or damaged seed phrases
Seed phrases of 12 or 24 words are the master keys to modern wallets. If yours has missing, illegible or out-of-order words, recovery may still be possible depending on how many gaps there are and what else you know. A phrase with one or two problems is a very different proposition from a phrase that is mostly gone, and we will tell you honestly which side of the line you are on.
Hardware wallets: Ledger, Trezor and others
Hardware wallets are excellent for security, but people do forget PINs, lose devices or damage them. The key point: your crypto lives on the blockchain, not inside the device. If your recovery phrase survives, access can be restored on a new device. If both the device and the phrase are compromised, the position is harder, and honest advice matters more than optimism.
Crypto on dead or damaged hard drives
Old laptops, failed drives and formatted machines have swallowed a great deal of early crypto. Specialist data recovery can sometimes retrieve wallet files from damaged media.
